Looked into Flood Insurance?

Looked into Flood Insurance - Blog

Flood insurance isn’t something we typically think about especially if your home is not in a flood zone. However, the recent flooding in Waverly TN and other flash floods thru out the state should make everyone aware it can happen almost anywhere.

A home insurance policy doesn’t cover flood insurance so while you think you maybe covered its not on your home policy. Flood insurance is written thru the NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program) which is managed by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). A Flood is defined by the NFIP as “A general and temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of two or more acres of normally dry land or of two or more properties (one of which is your property) from:

  • overflow of inland or tidal waves.
  • unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source
  • mudflow”

While this maybe interesting the important thing to know is you probably are not covered now, but you CAN get flood insurance even if you are not in a flood zone. If you are not in a flood zone the average price for a flood policy covering $250,000 in dwelling coverage and $100,000 in personal property coverage is roughly $700 for the year.
