Driving in a ROUNDABOUT

Driving in a ROUNDABOUT!

People around the United States are noticing more and more roundabouts popping up around their cities & small towns and Tennesseans are no exception. This centuries-old design can be found all over the world from the Place Charles de Gaulle, the street that surrounds the famed Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France which dates back to 1780 to one of Tennessee’s own modern shopping center entrances, The Crossings, located in Spring Hill. Have you ever wondered why roundabouts are becoming more common? Let's take a closer look.

HOW DO ROUNDABOUTS WORK?

Sometimes drivers can be intimidated by roundabouts, generally due to a lack of experience using a roundabout but like many things in life, understanding roundabouts is half the battle for alleviating any fears. Drivers enter the intersection by first navigating a

gentle curve. After yielding to traffic already in the roundabout, they enter the circle. Then,

they drive around the circle in a counterclockwise direction until exiting at their desired

roadway. When using a roundabout you should try to enter and exit the intersection without

coming to a complete stop.

WHO HAS THE RIGHT-OF-WAY IN A ROUNDABOUT?

The vehicle entering the roundabout should always yield to cars already driving within the circle. Most modern roundabouts feature a dotted yield line at each entry point to show where entry to the circle begins.

ARE ROUNDABOUTS SAFER THAN OTHER INTERSECTIONS?

Yes. This could help to explain why more and more roundabouts are emerging across roadways everywhere. They’re proven to be considerably safer than standard intersections that rely on

stop signs or traffic lights; however, it is worth mentioning that in junctures with highly variable

flow and speed limits, traffic lights are still safer. Studies show that intersections in the U.S. that have been converted from traffic signals or stop signs to roundabouts have reduced injury crashes by up to 80%, with a total crash reduction of up to 47%.
